A first visit is mostly about listening and looking. Knowing the steps takes away a lot of the worry.
Before you go
Write down your main concern, any medicines you take and any allergies or health conditions. If you have old dental records or X-rays, bring them or ask your previous dentist to send them.
1. A conversation
The dentist will ask about your teeth, your health, and what brought you in. Be honest about habits such as smoking, sugary drinks or grinding your teeth. It helps, and nobody is judging.
2. An examination
The dentist checks your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks and jaw. They may use a small mirror and a probe to look for decay and gum problems.
3. X-rays if needed
X-rays show what cannot be seen by eye, such as decay between teeth. Your dentist decides whether you need them. Tell the clinic if you are or might be pregnant.
4. A clean, if it fits
Some dentists clean your teeth in the same visit; others book it separately.
5. A plan and a price
You should leave knowing what was found, what is urgent and what can wait, what it will cost, and when to come back.
If you are nervous
Say so when you book and again in the chair. Agree a signal, such as raising your hand, to pause. Many dentists are very used to nervous patients.
