A good dentist is someone you will see for years, so a few minutes of checking at the start is worth it. Here are seven things to look at before you book.

1. Is the dentist properly registered?

Every country has a dental council or authority that keeps a register of dentists allowed to practise. Ask for the registration number and, if you can, look it up on the official register. On Dental Chambers we check this before a profile is shown, and you can read how in our verification page.

2. Does the dentist suit what you need?

Many dentists are general dentists and can handle check-ups, fillings and cleaning. For braces, root canals, gum disease, implants or children's care, you may want a dentist with a special interest or a specialist. Look at the specialities on the profile.

3. How is infection control handled?

You are allowed to ask how instruments are cleaned and sterilised, and whether single-use items are used for each patient. A good clinic answers easily and without fuss.

4. Is the plan explained clearly?

A good dentist explains what is wrong, the options, the likely cost and what happens if you wait. If you feel rushed or pushed towards the most expensive option, ask for time or a second opinion.

5. Is the price clear before treatment starts?

Ask for an estimate in writing for anything beyond a check-up, and ask what is included, for example X-rays, follow-up visits or a crown made in a lab.

6. Can you reach the clinic when something goes wrong?

Check opening days, how to book urgent visits, and what the clinic does for problems after hours. Chamber address, hours and open slots are shown on each profile.

7. Do you feel comfortable?

Trust matters. If you are nervous, say so. A good dentist will slow down, explain each step and stop when you ask.
