Whether you are on holiday, working overseas or studying in a new country, tooth trouble at the wrong moment is stressful. A little planning helps.

Before you travel

  • See your dentist four to eight weeks before a long trip, so any small problem is fixed first.
  • Ask for a short summary of your treatment, and copies of recent X-rays if you have them.
  • Check whether your travel insurance covers dental emergencies. Many policies cover pain relief but not routine work.
  • Pack a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, floss or interdental brushes, and any dental products your dentist advised.

If you need a dentist abroad

  • Look for a dentist who is registered in that country, and check the registration if you can.
  • Ask for a clear plan and price before treatment, and for the treatment to be written down.
  • For an emergency like swelling, fever or trouble breathing, go to a hospital.
  • Keep receipts and notes for your insurer and for your home dentist.

Living abroad long term

Find a regular dentist soon after you arrive, rather than waiting for pain. Learn how the local system works, what is covered, and which languages the clinic speaks.

Dental tourism

Treatment abroad can cost less, but complex work needs follow-up. Ask what happens if something goes wrong after you go home, and who will fix it.
