Fixed braces and clear aligners both move teeth into better positions. Neither is better for everyone. The right choice depends on your teeth and on you.
Fixed braces
- Brackets are fixed to the teeth, so they work all the time and do not depend on you remembering.
- They can handle many kinds of problems, including complex ones.
- They are visible (though ceramic or tooth-coloured types are less so), and cleaning takes more effort.
Clear aligners
- Removable, almost invisible trays that you change every one to two weeks.
- They are usually worn for around 20 to 22 hours a day, so they only work if you wear them.
- You take them out to eat and clean your teeth, which makes hygiene easier.
- They suit many mild to moderate cases, but not every case.
Questions to ask your dentist or orthodontist
- What is wrong with my bite, and which options can fix it?
- Why do you recommend this option for me?
- How long will treatment take, and how often must I come?
- What is the full cost, including check-ups and what comes after?
- What happens after the braces or aligners come off? Most people need a retainer for years.
- Who will be treating me, and what is their training?
A word of caution
Tooth movement is a medical treatment. It should start with an examination, ideally with X-rays, and be supervised by a qualified dentist. Find an orthodontist on Dental Chambers.
